Drs. Borchert & Tabbara to Receive Volunteer Award

The Board is pleased to recognize the longtime service of volunteers Mark S. Borchert, M.D., and Khalid F. Tabbara, M.D., by presenting them the 2017 Ben Goldfeller Volunteer Service Award at the 2017 Spring Oral Examination. Both Drs. Borchert and Tabbara have helped to administer 20 or more Oral Examinations for the American Board of Ophthalmology.

The award is named for the late Mr. Ben Goldfeller, a resident of San Francisco and longtime friend of the ABO, who volunteered at 50 Oral Examinations until his death in 2002 at the age of 86. Ben became involved with the Board when he assisted with the use of microscopes. After microscopes were discontinued as part of the Oral Examination process, he found other ways to help with the administration and delivery of the exam.
