Meet the 2016 Goldfeller Volunteer Award Winners

December 8, 2016

In recognition for dedicated service to the administration of 20 or more examinations, three longtime American Board of Ophthalmology volunteers received the Ben Goldfeller Award at the Fall 2016 Oral Examination.

The award is named for the late Mr. Ben Goldfeller, a resident of San Francisco and longtime friend of the ABO, who volunteered at 50 Oral Examinations until his death in 2002 at the age of 86. Ben became involved with the Board when he assisted with the use of microscopes. After microscopes were discontinued as part of the Oral Examination process, he found other ways to help with the administration and delivery of the exam.

The award is named for Mr. Ben Goldfeller, a loyal friend to the ABO, who volunteered at 50 Oral Examinations before passing away in 2002 at the age of 86. In the early days of the exam, Ben handled the set up of microscopes. When microscopes were discontinued, he found other ways to contribute, regardless of whether the exams were held in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago or Philadelphia.
