Dr. John Pendergrass, a retired diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, recently presented the McCain Library Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi with a vast collection of political and civil rights memorabilia amassed over 45 years of scouring flea markets, memorabilia shows, and internet auctions. Dr. Pendergrass, a resident of Hattiesburg, MS, told the university he felt it was time to pass along his collection, which includes campaign buttons and signage from famous national races as well as more obscure local races, so that these pieces of history could be preserved. For more on the collection, read the full story in USM's student newspaper.
