Congratulations to the 79 newest board-certified diplomates of the American Board of Ophthalmology, who completed the organization’s first-ever online oral examination in July. Candidates for board certification must complete an accredited training program in ophthalmology and achieve a passing score on a rigorous written assessment known as the Written Qualifying Examination. The final step in the certification process, the oral examination, challenges candidates to demonstrate their ability to appropriately care for eye and vision patients by analyzing a series of cases and discussing their approach to data acquisition, diagnosis, and management of each patient. The American Board of Ophthalmology issued its first certificates in 1916, and since that time, has certified more than 32,000 ophthalmologists in the United States.
