The American Board of Ophthalmology congratulates diplomate Julia A. Haller, MD, ophthalmologist-in-chief at Wills Eye Hospital, who will receive the 2019 Physician of the Year Award today, given by The Philadelphia Inquirer. The award, one of the news publication's "Influencers of Healthcare" honors, celebrates the city's leading healthcare professionals who go above and beyond to improve the collective health of Philadelphia and strive to make a difference in their patients' lives, according to the press release.
Dr. Haller is the William Tasman, MD, Endowed Chair at Wills. She serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and is Co-Director of the Wills Vision Research Center at Jefferson. She was educated at the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Princeton University, and Harvard Medical School. Following a surgical internship at Johns Hopkins, she trained in ophthalmology at Wilmer Eye Institute and completed a fellowship in ocular pathology at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat hospital. Dr. Haller holds numerous honors and awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Louis Braille Award from the Associated Services for the Blind. She has published over 370 scientific articles and book chapters.
